CommNet offers key support at Europe’s biggest science event

Members of CommNet will attend this year’s largest European science event – the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) – in Copenhagen from 21-26 June, to deliver insight on key topics including citizen science, social media, storytelling and the value of webinars.

CommNet is a support network for EU-funded projects in the knowledge-based bioeconomy (KBBE), helping scientists and researchers to identify and communicate with key stakeholders. Membership of CommNet is absolutely free for KBBE projects and enables access to a range of benefits, from strategic communications and media training to educational toolkits and business networking opportunities.

Chair of CommNet Rhonda Smith, from Minerva UK a partner in CommNet, says, “We’re really looking forward to ESOF; it’s the ideal setting for us to increase our outreach and raise awareness of the fantastic support available to European scientists, to help them secure maximum impact for their projects. ESOF promises to be a valuable experience for both delegates and the CommNet team alike.”

CommNet will be on-hand at Stand 37 to provide information and advice throughout the five day event. Regular “drop-in sessions” will be held at specific advertised times on using webinars as an educational resource, telling a project’s story and making the most of social media.

Silvia Raimondi, from CommNet partner youris.com, explains, “I’ll be delivering a session about the most popular social networks, highlighting how to choose the best one according to what you want to achieve. Attendees will be given quick and easy insight to the management of social media accounts and will learn how to measure success.”

In addition, Rhonda will deliver two Masterclasses at Copenhagen Business School titled “Engaging the Citizen: why, how and when” (9.30am & 11.30am, Tuesday 24th June). Packed with case studies, activities and ideas, these interactive sessions will demonstrate how – and why – we should embrace a citizen-aware approach to scientific research.

Public engagement in research projects has many advantages for both citizens and scientists,” Rhonda explains. “It’s an effective way of enhancing investigation and research, setting the agenda, asking the right questions, gathering data and providing a test bed. Public involvement in science also brings many societal benefits; for example, in helping citizens to make sense of policy and encouraging young people into scientific careers.”

Places for the Masterclasses are limited, so it’s important to book early to avoid disappointment. Email training@commnet.eu to secure a place.
