The EU market could reach between 0.9 and 1.8 BEUR by 2030 according to BIO-TIC estimates. However, the market value could be greater if the barriers hampering the development of biobased surfactants are addressed. Despite market drivers such as growing environmental concerns and fluctuating oil prices, biosurfactant production in Europe is mainly impacted by the strict regulatory framework. However, opportunities for market uptake persist due to the potential of using waste materials as a feedstock and the existence of multiple end users.

BIO-TIC is an FP7 funded project aiming to identify the hurdles to industrial biotechnology (IB) and develop solutions to overcome them in order to unlock the potential of this key enabling technology (KET) in Europe. The project more specifically focuses on five product categories which have been identified to have significant potential for enhancing European economic competitiveness and introducing cross-cutting technology ideas. The final BIO-TIC blueprint document will encompass market, R&D and non-technological aspects of IB and will feed into the EU research and innovation agenda.
