It’s all about 3D food printing, safe and healthy food, eco-friendly solutions, new irrigation for dry soils and bioeconomy-related legislation

Bioeconomy Business Success Stories on the Website / CommNet on youtube

CommNet at ESOF in Copenhagen on youtube

Did you know that the CommNet Innovation Catalogue 2014 played a star role in a youtube video at the ESOF, the European Science Open Forum, which took place 21-26 June 2014 in Copenhagen? Click to watch the video

The project featured in the clip is PERFORMANCE, a FP7 bioeconomy project on food processing, more precisely on 3D food printing, which currently is a hot topic in the media across Europe. The PERFORMANCE project processes food for people with mastication problems and provides convenient catering solutions for day care or hospitals enabling them to offer personalized food to the patients by a smart manufacturing technology. On the video, one of the PERFORMANCE products is shown in a live demonstration. Prototype reformulated sausages are heated in a pan and served to the visitors at the CommNet stand.

CommNet Innovation Catalogue 2014 published – Business Success Stories on the Website

The story of PERFORMANCE was published in the CommNet Innovation Catalogue 2014, the second edition of the network’s main business publication. The catalogue features FP7 bioeconomy projects presented with a view to their business potential. Each research project is featured in a full colour double page spread, with explanations of their bioeconomy innovation aims, who the possible end users could be and what the current stage of development is. The catalogue is written and edited jointly with the communication managers of the projects and a journalist member of the CommNet consortium.

Being featured in the Innovation Catalogue: One of the main benefits for the projects is – besides having a dissemination tool in their hands – to receive a self-assessed positioning on the level-ladder of Technology Readiness, this being a prerequisite for an in depth communication between science and the industry world. The catalogue is available in hard copy as well as in a pdf-version at this link.

The project stories of the Innovation Catalogue 2014 and those of the Innovation Catalogue 2013 are now available on the website as single articles, and can be retrieved from there separately. This service will facilitate the thematic dissemination and exploitation of the project results sector-wise.  In the Innovation Catalogue 2013 twelve CommNet projects and their case studies were showcased belonging to two thematic fields: agrofood chain and bioplastics. In the Innovation Catalogue 2014 twelve projects from three thematic fields are highlighted representing the themes: Blue and white biotech/marine food safety, food chain and soil, water and fertilizers.

Business Dialogues: More than just “pitching events” – offering direct face-to-face feedback

All the projects published in the catalogue participated in subsequent Business Dialogues, an interactive format for face-to-face exchange with experts from industry, the retail sector and technology transfer experts. For many of the bioeconomy projects it was a first “reality-check” on what will be expected by the industry for a commercialization of their discoveries. In this regard the second edition of the Business Dialogues which brought together the twelve FP7 funded projects with ten expert evaluators on 12 June 2014 during a one-day-seminar in the Science Atrium building in Brussels city centre.

After the researchers ‘pitched’ their projects, expert feedback was offered focusing on the exploitation potential. This was a valuable experience for all participants, as they confirmed in their evaluations after the event.

First CommNet Policy Round Table showed appetite for stakeholder debate

Finally, an interesting debate and engaged discussions on policy related bioeconomy issues took place during the afternoon session of the event: the first CommNet Policy Round Table.

DG SANCO sent representatives who gave keynote presentations on food security and food safety foresight, health claims and animal welfare, followed by an exchange between the DG SANCO officers and the CommNet projects interested in policy exchange. The CHAFEA, EU Agency for Health and Consumers, Luxembourg, sent a veterinary inspector for the training of food inspectors and regulators to discuss with the more educational projects of the network.

The intensely led discussions during the Policy Round Table gave a clear message: more focus should be given to these formats in future; more resources should be dedicated to better structure and to encourage these exchanges for the benefit of both sides: bioeconomy researchers and EU policy makers.

On 2nd -3rd December 2014, the 3rd Bioeconomy Forum will be held in the Brussels Crowne Plaza Hotel, entailing new Business Dialogues and a Policy Round Table Talk, High-level Lectures and the CommNet Impact Awards Winning Ceremony. The Forum has become the meeting place for the bioeconomy research community.

The CommNet Industry Desk will continue its successful dissemination and exploitation activities for the benefit of bioeconomy research projects. Upon invitation of the French Association of Food Producers, the network is organizing a workshop during the French food show SIAL in October 2014 in Paris. Four projects from nutrition and food processing will showcase their findings and developments to an expert audience of the international food industry.

A more dedicated dissemination strategy of the two catalogues will be started in September after the summer break. Following the successful CommNet presentation at ESOF14, CommNet has been offered a stand free of charge at a major tech careers fair in Dublin, the Career Zoo. Sponsored by the Irish Research Council, this event is widely publicized, attended by major industry players, science graduates and postgraduates. Audience reach here is estimated at 6000-7000, and an eye-catching demonstration is planned with a view to garnering further media interest and gaining more followers for the project. National Convention Centre, Dublin, 13 September 2014.
